Ubuntu 22.04 will also use Wayland by default with NVIDIA's proprietary driver

Fresh start on Ubuntu 22.04

In the coming weeks there will be two major releases in the Linux world: Fedora 36 and Ubuntu 22.04. Approaching these dates, more and more news about these operating systems will be published, such as Jammy Jellyfish will use GNOME 42 or the new logo that the Canonical system will use from April. Today we have to talk again about the system whose logo is a circle of friends, more specifically for installations on computers that use NVIDIA hardware.

Ubuntu currently uses Wayland by default, but not if you're using NVIDIA's proprietary driver. Something happens with this hardware and Linux, since in some systems or desktops it is easy to read user comments assuring that it has stopped working and other software like WayDroid does not work with NVIDIA cards. At least as far as Ubuntu is concerned, things seem to be looking up, as right now It already works by default in Wayland on computers with its proprietary driver.

Ubuntu 22.04 gets along better with NVIDIA

Canonical decided to switch to Wayland with the release of Hirsute Hippo (21.04), but only for computers with AMD Radeon or Intel cards. If you wanted to use NVIDIA's proprietary driver, the system booted into X.Org. NVIDIA has been working to correct its issues with Wayland, and has improved support for GBMInter alia.

It must be made clear that only will work on NVIDIA 510 series or later; it will not work if the proprietary driver is used in an earlier version. Is that version since it gets along much better with Wayland and Mutter, so it will already be activated by default when Ubuntu 22.04 is released next month. In fact, it already is in the Daily Build.

Ubuntu 22.04 is coming next April 21 with novelties like this or others such as the possibility of changing the accent color and the new logo.
