Thunderbird 78 has already been released, know its news and changes

After 11 months from the latest version release the new version of the popular email client «Thunderbird 78» arrives which is developed by the community and based on Mozilla technologies.

This new version released is classified as an LTS version (long-term support), whose updates are released throughout the year, as Thunderbird 78 is based on the ESR version of Firefox 78.

Main news in Thunderbird 78

In this new version of Thunderbird 78 se highlights built-in experimental support for end-to-end encryptionor correspondence and digital signatures of letters based on OpenPGP public keys.
This functionality was previously provided by the Enigmail plugin, which is no longer supported by Thunderbird 78.

The integrated implementation is a new development, which was prepared with the participation of the author Enigmail. It is important to mention that this support is not enabled by default.

In Thunderbird 78 we can find that the main structure integrates the Lightning calendar planner and the task manager, in addition to the support for importing in ICS format to the calendar by specifying the "-file" option on the command line.

As well added the ability to select messages through checkboxes in a separate column «Select messages» instead of the classic mark and the button «Delete» has also been added to the panel with the list of messages to delete the marked messages.

The layout of the account settings window has been redesigned so that it is easier to understand and find the desired configuration. The "Account Settings Center" has been revamped as a tab.

Support for WCAP (Web Calendar Access Protocol) has been removed and the transition to using asynchronous storage access is complete.

Also we can also find a mode with a dark theme, adapted to reduce the burden of vision when working in the dark. The dark theme is activated automatically when you activate the night mode in the operating system.

And a new vector style has been applied to the thumbnails, which provides a better image on HiDPI displays and when dark mode is enabled.

Of the other changes that stand out from this version:

  • The look and feel of the plugin manager has been changed. Now you can preview the themes.
  • An option has been added to the settings to allow anonymity of the header over the time of the message.
  • An item has been added to the application menu to call global search on the entire message base. The global search tab has been redesigned.
  • Support for OTR message encryption (unregistered messaging) and support for IRC echo messages have been added to chat.
  • The requirements for the Linux platform have been increased: you now need at least GTK 3.14, Glibc 2.17 and libstdc ++ 4.8.1 to work.
  • Buttons have been added to the context menu of the folder with the list of recently opened messages to move items up and down in the list.
  • The address bar of the tabs that display web pages has been improved.
  • Before displaying the stored passwords, the user's system password is prompted.
  • The SQLite library is used to store the address book. Conversion from the older MAB (Mork) format is done automatically.
  • Added a new parser and format component for vCard.
  • Added support for vCard conversion versions 3.0 and 4.0.
  • Improved dialog for packing mail folders (cleaning deleted messages).
  • Hardware accelerated graphics support is enabled by default.
  • Disabled support for TLS 1.0 and 1.1.
  • Discontinued support for XUL plugins.

    I already have it ... But the requirements are somewhat brutal with respect to the previous version (more RAM required, which before was not so much).

    Anyway, that Thunderbird, both in Win (I have not tried it yet, but I will do it at any time) and in Linux, it consumes a lot of RAM. Without disheveled and, without doing much, half a gig already consumes.

    Now it really is a "resource trader."
