Three F-Droid utilities to install on your phone

Three F-Droid Utilities

They say there is no worse fanatic than a convert. Although I have been a user of tablets since 2011, I have never used them more than as an ebook reader or to answer WhatsApp (Yes, you can. The trick is to use a mobile to receive the confirmation SMS and have the tablet connected via WiFi) As for mobiles, I only bought the cheapest ones with Android Go.

A series of technological catastrophes it forced me to accept the loan of my niece's old Motorola G5, my first experience with a quality phone. (And with that true privacy nightmare that is the full version of Android). Keep in mind that the guy who defends the use of Microsoft products is saying it in this blog, therefore it is not that my demands on this issue are very high.

The thing is, I became a huge fan of the F-Droid app store and a regular user of their programs. That is why so many articles recommending their applications.

Three F-Droid Utilities Worth Considering

I am leaving out of this list all the applications that interact with Nextcloud because this software deserves a series of articles for itself. I promise to talk about them later.

OCR

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software is the nearsighted (Or at least this nearsighted) best friend Years of suffering from books with tiny letters ended with the purchase of my first scanner and the gift version of the Abby FineReader. For years Linux had nothing like it until the appearance of Tesseract

This application brings Tesseract functionality to Android devices and can work offline after a short training.

Some features:

  • Very accurate
  • Extract texts from images.
  • Allows you to select part of the data.
  • Copy to device clipboard.
  • Three types of recognition; standard, better and faster.
  • Support for 102 languages.
  • Recognize mathematical formulas and equations.
  • Image can be processed from device gallery

Omni Notes

Apparently, no open source mobile app developer came up with that one might need a word processor for the phone. But, Notepad applications are there to kick.

For my taste Omni Notes is the best.

With the purpose of adopting the new Google design recommendations, and at the same time being compatible with older phones, this application has the following features:

  • Material Design interface with basic actions to add, modify, archive, throw away and delete notes.
  • Notes can be shared and merged.
  • Notes search function.
  • Images, audio, and generic files can be attached to the notes.
  • Notes can be sorted by tags and categories.
  • With notes you can create to-do lists.
  • There is a sketch mode for the notes.
  • Notes can be accessed from the home screen.
  • Notes can be imported and exported to create backup copies.
  • Integration with the Google assistant to write voice notes.
  • Support for our language and other 29.

As a negative point, it must be said that F-Droid users warn that in the privacy settings, the sending of data is configured by default.

Open TimeLimit

This application Allows you to set limits on the use of your device.

Different categories can be established with one or more applications. Each category is assigned a time slot in which its use is allowed.

Another form of limitation is to configure time limit rules. These rules establish the total duration of use in one day or in several days (for example, a weekend). It is possible to combine both, for example 2 hours per weekend day, but in total only 3 hours. If you behaved well you can allocate extra time. Also to temporarily disable all time limits.

The program can assign times to multiple users with different rules for each one.
