It's been just over two months since PINE64 ad who was preparing the PineTab2, among other things they published at the time. Considering its specifications, the hyping It could have been older, and if it wasn't, at least in a personal capacity, it was because of the first version, that Early Adopter version that currently has gone more than 3 months without receiving any updates. But cheer up (mine, of course), because here we are to talk about this second version that looks better.
The first one was too good to be true. A tablet with Linux by € 88 in Spain and that it worked as seen in the videos... But it turned out that taxes and fees were not included, so in the end we had to pay about € 150 if I remember correctly. That is the starting price of the PineTab2, although we assume that VAT will have to be added to that and maybe some tariff.
There will be a 2GB PineTab4 and another with 8GB of RAM
Taking into account the many per hundred, and that it costs 59% more, I calculate that the PineTab2 will have an entry price with VAT and other taxes of about €240 in Spain. That's the 4GB one, because a detail that they have revealed today is that there will be two versions from the PineTab2: one with 4GB of RAM and the other with 8GB of RAM. The basic one will have a storage of 64GB, and the most expensive 128GB. The one with 8GB RAM/128GB storage will be priced at $209, on which I estimate that in Spain it will be around €335. That's what a decent Android tablet costs, but this PineTab2 should be capable of a lot more.
And I ask the same question again as a little less than three years ago: should I buy one? My advice, also based on experience, is that you have to take it easy. This one looks much better than the previous one and it should work fine, but that's a promise they didn't keep in the Early Adopter version, so I'd expect it. In the worst case, well, one runs out, but the reviews that are made of the next PINE64 tablet will let us know where they are now. And if that point is good, and we have not been able to get hold of a PineTab2, then ours will be the PineTab3. And let's not forget the keyboard, for now they have not said anything and that must mean that it is only in English.
For those who may be interested, when they report their availability we will publish the corresponding article as soon as possible.
