OSI will stop working with FSF if Richard Stallman does not resign again

Richard Stallman

During the last days the community related to the open source and also in relation to the Free Software Foundation (FSF) They've been in a mess because of to the recent announcement of his return from Richard Stallman (details can be found in diego's post In the following link).

And is that Richard M. Stallman surprised many by announcing that he was returning to the board of directors of the Free Software Foundation whereby if the FSF allows you to rejoin its board of directors, his return does not delight everyone the main players in open source and free software, in particular to the OSI (Open Source Initiative).

Since the latter announced that it will suspend all collaboration with the FSF for the time being as long as Stallman is part of the organization's leadership.

In its announcement I made, OSI shares the following:

To fully deliver on the promise of open source, the Open Source Initiative (OSI) is committed to building an inclusive environment where a diverse community of contributors feels welcome. Clearly, this is not possible if we include those who have demonstrated a pattern of behavior that is incompatible with these goals.

And it is that the OSI did not hesitate to publicly express its "outrage" for this news, as its position is clear: the organization refuses to allow Stallman to occupy a leadership position in anything that has to do with open source and free software and will no longer collaborate with the FSF if these are not met two requirements.

“To fully deliver on the promise of open source, OSI is committed to creating an inclusive environment where a diverse community of contributors feels welcome. This is clearly not possible if we include those who have demonstrated a pattern of behavior incompatible with these objectives, ”he said.

Richard Stallman recently announced that he will return to the FSF Board of Directors, a statement that the FSF has not denied. We believe that it is inappropriate for Stallman to occupy a leadership position in the free and open source software community. If we don't speak out against this, our silence could be misconstrued as support. The Open Source Initiative calls on the Free Software Foundation to hold Stallman accountable for his past behavior, remove him from the leadership of the organization, and strive to correct the damage he has caused to all those he excluded, ”OSI demands.

According to OSI, this includes:

"Those whom Stallman deems less worthy and those whom he has hurt with his words and actions."

“We will not attend any event that Richard Stallman attends and we will not be able to collaborate with the FSF until Stallman is removed from the leadership of the organization. Free and open source software will not be accessible to everyone until it is safe for everyone to participate, and therefore we call on our peers in the broader software community to join us in making these commitments. ” wrote OSI in an article on its website.

Regardless of the answer, the simple fact that he has made an announcement of such magnitude highlights other questions and above all simply Stallman is on the edge of the cliff two assumptions, one where he ignores everything and his return is gradual and especially where he runs the risk of damaging the relationship among the various organizations in the open source and free software community.

Whereas on the other hand, if his return to the FSF board is denied, he would still be setting a precedent and many related changes in FSF policies and in various open source communities.

Lastly, Stallman is now known to be taking a firm stand: he will not resign again. So what will things be like in the future between OSI and FSF?

No free software community contributed as much to free software as Stalman. OSI's decision is detrimental to the Free Software Community.

Could it be that the OSI sees the straw in another's eye and not the beam in its own?

It is clear, well, the OSI is an association of "offended" politically, attitudes that identify more who says them.
