The next version of Cinnamon will be faster than usual

Linux Mint 18.2 Sonya

Linux Mint project is one of the most popular and famous Gnu / Linux projects not only for its Ubuntu base or philosophy but also for the programs and tools it has developed. His Cinnamon desk is one of them. Its minimalism and similarity to proprietary operating systems has made Cinnamon reach other Gnu / Linux distributions and can be enjoyed by users who do not use Linux Mint.

But despite its popularity, Cinnamon is not in very good health and is getting slower and slower. The latest benchmarks indicate that Cinnamon takes up to six times longer than metacity, Gnome's window manager. Being times that are not optimal for many users.

However, this seems to be slowly being solved. Clem Lefebvre recently announced that the Cinnamon code has received some small modifications to try to solve these loading problems and (for the moment) they work correctly.

But even if Cinnamon improves its loading speed, Cinnamon's speed problem is still there and will continue to be as long as you share libraries and packages with Gnome. A problem from which many desks are being splashed and little by little some are solving it. The new Cinnamon changes will be seen in the next version of Linux Mint but also in our distribution if we use the development channels to install the latest version of Cinnamon, something not recommended but possible. To do this we just have to open a terminal and write the following:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-nightly
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install cinnamon

This will allow us to have the latest version of cinnamon, as long as when we are using a Debian based distribution, because the repository is for it. Or we can also opt for a virtual machine and the installation of Ubuntu with this repository, something ideal if we do not want to see our daily work lost. In any case, it seems that Linux Mint 19 and Cinnamon still have surprises to give us Do not you think?

Why do you compare cinnamon with metacity? They are different things, you mean mutter with metacity

Nice article, but metacity is no longer Gnome's window manager, since series 3 gnome uses Mutter.
    Greetings.

I love Cinnamon, any improvements will be appreciated. In addition, it is almost appreciated that the improvements come one by one, when there are many changes at the same time, they are also accompanied by many errors.
