The new version of the decentralized platform PeerTube 1.2 arrives

PeerTube is a decentralized platform whose objective is the organization of video hosting and video streaming.

PeerTube offers an independent alternative from the popular platforms YouTube, Dailymotion and Vimeo, using a P2P-based content distribution network and linking visitor browsers. The developments of the project are distributed under the AGPLv3 license.

How does PeerTube work?

PeerTube is based on the use of the BitTorrent Client "WebTorrent", which runs in the browser and uses WebRTC technology.

Theseirve to establish a P2P channel - direct communication between the browser and the ActivityPub protocol, allowing disparate servers to be linked to video in the general federated network where visitors are involved in content delivery and have the opportunity to subscribe to channels and receive notifications about new videos.

The web interface provided by the project is built using the angular framework.

PeerTube's federated network is formed as a community of small video hosting servers interconnected, each of which has its own administrator and its own rules can be adopted.

Each server with the video plays the role of a BitTorrent tracker that hosts the user accounts of this server and their video.

The user ID is formed in the form "@user_name @server_domain". Data transfer during viewing takes place directly from the browsers of other visitors viewing content.

If no one is watching the video, the return is arranged by the server where the video was originally uploaded (the WebSeed protocol is used).

PeerTube

In addition to distributing traffic among users who watch videos, PeerTube also allows authors to run nodes for distribution video primary to cache other authors' videos, thus forming not only a distributed network of not only clients, but also servers and also providing fault tolerance.

To start streaming through PeerTube, a user only needs to upload a video, a description and a set of tags (similar to what is done on any other similar platform) on one of the servers.

After that, the video will be available throughout the federated network and not just from the main download server.

How can a user contribute or access PeerTube?

To work with PeerTube and participate in content distribution, a regular web browser is sufficient and no additional software is required.

Users can track activity on selected video channels by subscribing to channels of interest on federated social networks (eg Mastodon and Pleroma) or by RSS.

To distribute video using P2P communications, the user can also add a special widget with a built-in web player to their site.

If a user is not satisfied with the rules for putting videos on a specific PeerTube server, they can connect to another server or run their own server.

For rapid server deployment, a preconfigured Docker image is provided. Currently, 328 servers have been launched supported by various volunteers and organizations to host the content of this platform.

Top 1.2 Release Innovations

Recently the announcement of the publication of the launch of PeerTube 1.2 was made in which a notification system has been implemented.

Esto in order to inform users about new comments, new videos in subscriptions, moderator actions, blacklist videos, how to complete video imports, new subscribers, mention comments to other people, register new users (for moderators).

Notifications can be displayed on the web interface or sent by email.

Now in this version moderators have the opportunity to manage users (add, delete, modify or block).

As well added the ability to remove local videos from a federated network via blacklists.

Added the ability to view the history of open videos, as well as disable their memorization and cleaning.
