The game developers for Linux. Valve games

Game developers

We enter the final part of this series of articles dedicated to the awards for the games of the year. It is the result of a survey that the specialized portal Gaming On Linux performs among your readers. We continue with what we started in our previous post; the listing of some titles of those selected as some of the best developer companies of 2019

In this case it's up to Valve.

The game developers for Linux. Valve

Possibly Valve is the company that did the most to turn Linux into a platform for video games. In addition to a program to manage downloads from its store, and a distribution specialized in games, Valve also released a tool to be able to use games created especially for Windows.

The company was founded in 1996 by two former Microsoft employees.

Some titles available for Linux are:

Half-Life

Is a game first person shooter belonging to the genre of science fiction. It is also the first title developed by the company.

The game stars Gordon Freeman, a theoretical scientist from the Anomalous Materials Laboratory at the Black Mesa Research Center. The action takes place in a huge underground and top secret scientific complex installed in a disused military base located in the New Mexico desert.

A failed experiment causes the opening of an interdimensional portal through which a group of aliens enters. Controlling Freeman we will have to save the laboratory and on the way to the planet.

Half-Life 2

The history takes place two decades after the events of the previous game.

When playing it, vLet's forget to take control of scientist Gordon Freeman, who finds himself on an Earth infested by aliens, dispossessed of all its resources and in which there is less and less population left. Freeman finds himself involved in the unenviable role of rescuing the world from the evil he unleashed on Black Mesa.

Dota 2

Dota It is the acronym in English for Defense of the Ancestors. This is a real-time action strategy game.

Each game is made up of two opposing factions. The Dire and the Radiant. Each of which has a fortress that contains a main structure called the Ancestor. The ancestors in turn are defended by several smaller buildings

The two teams, generally made up of five players each, face each other as the defenders of their respective Ancestors.

Dota Underlords

It was a matter of time before someone brought out something akin to Harry Potter's magical chess set. Or at least it reminds me a lot.

Dota Underlords proposes us a competitive strategy game inspired by chess. Players place the characters known as "heroes" on a battlefield in the form of an 8 × 8 grid. After the players arrange them, the heroes of one team automatically fight the opposing team without the player having to do anything else.

Each game features a maximum of eight players online who take turns playing each other in a one-on-one format. The winner will be the last player standing after eliminating all opposing heroes.

If you don't have anyone to play with, a single player versus bot game mode is also available, as well as a 'freestyle' practice mode that does not put limits on hero combinations. Finally, we have the duo mode in which players use separate boards, but sharing health and levels and acting as a team. Over the course of a game, players earn gold and experience points, which are used to upgrade heroes and other playable units to make them stronger.

SteamOS

SteamOS It is a Linux distribution derived from Debian, but with the kernel optimized for the execution of video games. Developed for video game consoles developed by Valve, they can also run on hardware that has the following characteristics.

Requirements for installing Steam OS

  • Processor: Intel or AMD 64-bit
  • Memory: 4 GB or more of RAM
  • Hard disk: 200 GB or more of free space
