The first RC of Kernel 4.9 is now available

Tux kernel with Matrix code

Although the Kernel 4.8 has come out very recently, Linus Torvalds and company already have started working on the next version, version 4.9. The proof is that the first stable version has already been released.

Version 4.9 will be a version LTS, that is, it will be a larger version than usual and with a longer lasting and stable support. The first RC is only the first step of what will be the development of version 4.9 of the Kernel, since 8 RC versions are expected to be released if everything goes as expected.

At the moment being the first RC version we do not have many news, only software updates for certain architectures like ARM and some performance improvements, as well as updates to file systems such as NFS. However, as I said before, this is only the beginning.

The expected date for the final launch is December 11, 2016, definitely an early christmas present to say goodbye to the year in the best possible way. As always, this date is subject to change, such as last minute bugs being detected or there is some setback with its development.

This version is expected with great anticipation, as the LTS versions are the preferred versions of most distributions. The reason for this is stability, as it is preferable to install a version with a support that lasts for years to install a version with a support that lasts a few months. It is also the preferred kernel for LTS versions of operating systems such as Ubuntu.

If you want to test it and compile it in your distribution, you can do it through the official page of kernel.org, In the mainline tab. Of course, I warn you that this version is not stable yet and is not safe for work environments.
