System76 prepares Cosmic, a new environment for its Pop! _OS

In Linux there is a lot to choose from. There are systems with robust and popular desks and philosophies, there are others with environments a little more unstable but much more functional or even some designed for touchscreens that can also be used on a computer. There are also many that are based on others and include their own customization, as is the case with System76's Pop! _OS that is working in a new graphical environment that they have dubbed as Cosmic.

Pop! _OS is based on GNOME, but System76 gives it a very special touch. That touch is going to be even more special this year, when the company launches the new graphical environment in which it is working. Cosmic seems to take functions from GNOME 40, but, for example, there are two separate views for workspaces and applications. On the other hand, starting with the next version of the operating system there will be a dock at the bottom.

Cosmic is the answer to feedback from its users

We're delivering a refined desktop user experience in Pop! _OS through our GNOME-based desktop environment: COSMIC. It is a refined solution that makes the desktop easier to use, but more powerful and efficient for our users through customization. The new designs are developed from extensive testing and user feedback since the launch of Pop! _OS 20.04, and they are currently being further refined in their testing phase.

System76 says that much of what is included in Cosmic has been introduced by user feedback. Default, the META key (Windows) activates the launcher, from where you can launch or switch between applications, execute commands or do calculations. This behavior can be changed to open the workspaces or the application view.

Cosmic will arrive in June with Pop! _OS 21.04, system that will be based on Ubuntu 21.04 Hirsute Hippo. Shortly before, System76 will upload real desktop videos and later allow users to test the operating system.
