SuperTuxKart 1.0 now available with new tracks and online mode

Super Tux Kart 1.0

Good news if you like to play car games with your friends: SuperTuxKart 1.0 has been officially released. This is an important release for the title, since it is the first stable version of the famous open source game to offer the possibility of playing in an online multiplayer mode. It goes without saying that this will allow us to play with friends as if it were a PlayStation or Xbox, saving distances.

As you know, Tux is the Linux mascot. SuperTuxKart 1.0 is the version of Super Mario Kart for Linux operating systems, or rather created by the Linux community, which comes with many interesting news, among which the online mode stands out. And is that anyone who has played with friends in this way to any title will know the importance of being able to play with other people at the same time and full screen.

SuperTuxKart 1.0 includes upgraded cars

Its developers say it is the most important update in the entire history of the game, who is now 12 years old. The novelties included in this version are:

  • On-line mode, with which we can play with up to 9 friends (10 counting us). The system to connect is like that of other PC games: we will choose a server and start playing. The server may be public or private.
  • New tracks. The original track of the mansion has been improved and is now called Revenbridge Mansion. The Black Forest, a track that was previously paid, has also been included.
  • Improved cars.
  • Various game modes: normal race, time race, soccer, battle and capture the flag.
  • Gameplay and performance improvements.

To play online you will need a decent connection, especially if we use a private server; it will be the host user who must have a good connection. In any case, claim that you need a "minimum" bandwidth to be able to play to SuperTuxKart 1.0 in its multiplayer mode. This is also good news since, otherwise, the user with the best connection usually has an advantage (let them tell my rivals in Call of Duty who I shot where they were no longer because of my bad connection).

Although the game has the word "Tux" in its title, it is also available for Windows and macOS. Among those that must already be by definition is Android and Linux. Ubuntu users have it in the official repositories, but it has not yet been updated either in its APT version or in its Snap version. The Flatpak version is also not up to date yet. Those who want to play it will already have to download its binaries and run it manually. It is launched by executing the file run_game.sh, which will be done by double clicking on it after giving it permissions to run as a program (this depends on the operating system). The Android version, already updated, is available here.

Have you already tried it? How about?
