SkySQL, the new MariaDB database optimized for the cloud

MariaDB announced the release of the new database "MariaDB SkySQL" being this the first database "DbaaS" in unlocking the full power of MariaDB for transactions, analytics, or both, optimized with a cloud native architecture.

SkySQL offers the "MariaDB in the cloud" experience that customers have been waiting for, that is, a 100% functional and fully customizable solution that is based on first-rate support and experience in the source database, from engineers who developed it.

According to the announcement, Cloud SkySQL database is the first service-based database (DbaaS) capable of providing the following benefits:

  • Mission critical at all levels: SkySQL is based on the best standards in terms of high availability, scalability and security and guarantees disaster recovery in many areas, automatic repair, read load balancing, transparent read / write partitions, a white list of IP addresses and encryption end to end. It is the only DBaaS database that relies on MariaDB Enterprise Server to benefit from stability, reliability and security superior to that offered by the famous MariaDB Community Server version. In compliance with HIPAA law, SkySQL also enables its clients to comply with the requirements of the GDPR.
  • Always available and always ready: SkySQL runs on the latest version of the MariaDB platform, which allows users to have constant access to the latest features, enhancements, and security updates.
  • Smart transaction support: SkySQL supports conventional transactions, analytics, and smart transactions. It is the first DBaaS database to provide storage in rows, columns, and associated rows and columns.
  • Source experience: SkySQL is the first and only DBaaS database developed for MariaDB by MariaDB. Benefiting from decades of experience in database development, support and administration, SkySQL customers will benefit from the world's best support and peace of mind, as is the case with customers using a database deployed on site. Thanks to a DBaaS database directly available from the source, customers can also influence decisions in terms of desired functionality, while revenue is reinvested in MariaDB innovation.

"The universal need for robust and accessible database services has never been more essential to ensure 24-hour critical operations and simplified analytics in a changing world," said Michael Howard, CEO of MariaDB Corporation. «

In fact, current services are old and block community innovation, to the point where patches, as well as new versions and functionality, have literally been missing for years. MariaDB SkySQL is a next-generation cloud database designed by the world's best database developers, so businesses large and small can count on an always-available partner to implement more than just new applications.

SkySQL is essentially a native cloud instance managed by Kubernetes from MariaDB Platform, a unified transactional and analytics database platform.

SkySQL offers a full range of business features, such as sharing, load balancing, and automatic failover, and natively supports different types of workloads. Column storage and analysis can be done in conjunction with conventional transaction processing and online storage.

Data can be located according to your workload, for example, transactional workloads can rely on SSDs for fast access, while analytics workloads can be shifted to cheaper storage.

SkySQL implements a modern architecture that is based on Kubernetes for the organization containers, in ServiceNow for inventory, configuration and workflow management and in Prometheus and Grafana for real-time monitoring and visualization.

Today, SkySQL is only available on Google Cloud Platform, but the Azure and Amazon logos on the SkySQL fact sheet suggest that MariaDB Corporation will eventually offer it in these clouds.
