SiFive HiFive Unleashed is here and you can run Linux

HiFive board

YesFive It is a company that may not sound like much to you, but it is a company that has managed to resuscitate or bring ISA architecture out of its slumber RISC-V, a RISC architecture that seemed somewhat abandoned similar to MIPS, which has also been resurrected to create some SBC board projects. These types of boards, like the Raspberry Pi and the competition, are compatible with different GNU / Linux distros.

But unlike the Pi, the board SiFive HiFive Unleashed It is not based on ARM or x86 chips like others, but is based on RISC-V which is a somewhat more exotic architecture as I said in the previous paragraph, therefore the Linux kenel needs to support it and this is the case of our penguin core. So those who get one of these HiFIve Unleashed boards will be able to run Linux without any problem and test the advantages and disadvantages of this new microprocessor ...

And what does this chip have? Well, it is certainly not the most advanced, nor the most energy efficient speaking like ARMs, nor is it the most powerful in terms of performance, but it does achieve quite acceptable performance and in return it also gives us something that others do not have ... and it is that it is an architecture Royalty-free ISA. RISC-V is getting followers and many interested in projects based on it thanks to this property and thanks to the work done by who made it possible.

RISC-V came out of development work carried out by researchers from the University of Berkeley which have been joined by numerous and important external contributions who have wanted to collaborate. It is true that the first SoCs based on RISC-V were only for IoT and embedded devices, but SiFive has achieved enough performance in its Freedom U540 and its HiFive Unleashed board to be able to run Linux without problems.

Thank you very much for the report, it was honestly a huge mistake on my part and I apologize. I have written "advantages" a thousand times and I know it is with V, but writing this post I was tired and made a huge mistake. That is no excuse, I will try not to make any more mistakes of that type.

      Greetings and thank you!

As a bird I have read and clearly says "try the benefits" when it should be "advantages". Greetings.
