Shortwave, the previous Gradio evolves to improve the experience when listening to the radio

Shortwave welcome screen

Personally, I cannot say that I am a huge fan of radio. In the radio stations they do not put us what we want, but what they want. I never listen to the radio from the device designed for it, but things can change when we talk about an internet radio where we can search for stations of all kinds. That's basically what it does short wave, an application for listening to online radio stations that has been designed primarily for GNOME.

There are a few things to know about Shortwave: the first is that it is open source. The second is that it is the Gradio's successor, an app that has long allowed us to listen to online radio from our Linux devices, but was discontinued after its developer, Felix, joined the GNOME project. It has now been renamed and created "from scratch" in the Rust programming language.

Shortwave is compatible with Gradio libraries

Station search

If you were a user of Gradio, you also have to know that it is compatible with Shortwave. More specifically, we can import the library of the first one to listen to it in the second, so we will not have to do the work of searching and saving our favorite stations again.

Among the most outstanding functions of Shortwave, we have:

  • Compatible with degree, to import your library.
  • It uses Radio Station listings, which is powered by the user community.
  • Includes tons of stations from around the world.
  • Support for streaming / casting from radio stations to supported devices, including support for Chromecast.
  • Light and dark themes.
  • Identify the song that is playing on the radio station.

If you are interested in installing Shortwave, you have to know that it is available in code form from your GitLab page. If the previous option does not seduce you, also is available as a Flatpak package from this link by Flathub. In order to install applications in Flatpak format, in most distributions support must be enabled, which will also allow us to search for the app from our software center.
