Scientific Linux 7.9 arrives with OpenAFS, yum-cron and more

The new version of the Linux distribution "Scientific Linux 7.9" has already been released and comes with various improvements of which the inclusion of some new packages that come to improve some things in the system. This new version of Scientific Linux 7.9 is built on the basis of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.9 package and complemented by tools intended for use in scientific institutions.

The main differences with RHEL come down to rebranding and cleaning up links to Red Hat services. Specific scientific applications, as well as additional drivers, are provided for installation from external repositories such as EPEL and elrepo.org. Before upgrading to Scientific Linux 7.9, it is recommended that you run 'yum clean all' to clear the cache.

Scientific Linux 7.9 Key New Features

In this new version of the distribution we can find that the package with OpenAFS has been added, open source distributed FS Andrew file system, as well as the SL_gdm_no_user_list package, which disables the display of the user list in GDM when necessary to comply with a stricter security policy and the SL_enable_serialconsole package to configure the serial console.

In addition, changes have been made to packages, mainly related to the change of brand.

The system yum-cron is used to install updates automatically, instead of yum-autoupdate. By default, updates are applied automatically and then a notification is sent to the user. To change the behavior in the automated installation stage, the packages SL_yum-cron_no_automated_apply_updates (prohibits automatic installation of updates) and SL_yum-cron_no_default_excludes (allows installation of updates with the kernel) have been prepared.

Files with configuration from external repositories (EPEL, ELRepo, SL-Extras, SL-SoftwareCollections, ZFSonLinux) have been moved to a centralized repository, since these repositories are not specific to specific releases and can be used with any version of Scientific Linux 7. To download data about the repositories, the user must run: "yum install yum-conf-repos" and then configure individual repositories, for For example, "yum install yum-conf-epel yum-conf-zfsonlinux yum-conf-softwarecollections yum-conf-hc yum-conf-extras yum-conf -elrepo".

Compared to the Scientific Linux 6.x branch, the packages alpine, SL_desktop_tweaks, SL_password_for_singleuser, yum-autoupdate, yum-conf-adobe, thunderbird (available in the EPEL7 repository) are excluded from the base composition and added SL_no_colorls package to disable color output in ls.

The components (shim, grub2, Linux kernel) used when booting in UEFI Secure Boot mode are signed with a Scientific Linux key, which, when enabled, requires manual operations as the key must be added to the firmware.

Lastly, it is mentioned that Scientific Linux 7 has adopted a stronger use of yum variables to help simplify customization for individual administrators.

Now any customization of repository files, such as using local mirrors, is easily saved between versions as the repository files provided by SL are not expected to change.

However, this provides unexpected behavior during our Release Candidate process. If the 7x configuration is enabled, it will point to the 7x repository instead of the Release Candidate repository. At that time, the 7x repository will contain older software than the Release Candidate.
