For those who are still unfamiliar with Sailfish OS, they should know whate this uses a graph stack based on Wayland and the Qt5 library, the system environment is built on the foundation of Mer, which has been developed as an integral part of Sailfish since April, and the Nemo packages.

The user shell, the basic mobile applications, the QML components to build the Silica graphical interface, an intermediate layer for launching Android applications, an intelligent text input engine and a data synchronization system are proprietary.

The interesting thing about Sailfish OS is that it is a system that has been in the sights of the greats, such as the case of Huawei that at the time (a few weeks ago) due to the problem that arose with the US restriction, it could no longer implement Android in its new equipment that it manufactured.

Main new features of Sailfish 3.1

With the release of this new version we can find that the interface of many basic applications has been modified, including people, the phone, messages, and the watch, which have been modified to reflect current trends in mobile interface design.

Document, PDF, spreadsheet and presentation viewers were revised. Added support for opening plain text files. Fixed issues with encoding RTF files.

In the email application, the optional ability to certify messages with a digital signature using PGP has been added.

Added the ability ("Settings> Gestures> Show tips and advice") to disable the display of messages and recommendations;

The messenger program redesigned the thread of the conversation, added a header with the recipient's data and added support for saving or editing the entry in the address book without exiting the application;

The People Address Book has been redesigned, which divides sections to search, view, and edit the recipient. The contact list has been rearranged alphabetically.

The redesigned interface for sending and receiving calls is divided into three tabs: Dialer, History and People. The dialer is optimized to control the hand holding the phone.

Simple and advanced display of call history was also added. A button has been added to the new call arrival dialog to quickly send a predefined message to reply.

Launch layer for Android apps has been improved, in which fingerprint authentication is possible, the TLS 1.2 app is enabled by default, the ability to add contacts from Android apps (for example Whatsapp) is implemented to the People app, and issues are fixed by start WhatsApp and Telegram.

Of the other changes in this new version that stand out:

  • Improved isolation of system APIs and various subsystems
  • WebGL support is enabled in the browser
  • The calendar scheduler has the opportunity to send invitations via ActiveSync
  • In the application for working with the camera, the one-touch photo zoom function has been added
  • On the watch, timers, alarm clocks and stopwatches are designed as separate tabs
  • Bluez Bluetooth stack updated to version 5.50.
