Some robots you didn't know worked with Linux

Linux Robot

It is not the first article that we dedicate to robots and drones In LxA, in fact we have already talked several times about projects like ROS and other robots that work thanks to Linux. Well, today we are publishing this article again with a compilation with some commercial robots that you are sure familiar with or you may even be the owner of one and you have not even noticed that they work thanks to Linux in its electronic heart.

If you recall, we've also conducted interviews with Erle Robotics here and posted some of his Linux-based articles and ROS (Robot Operating System)In them, I have taken care to ensure that the importance of Linux in today's robotics is noticed. In fact, the OSRF (Open Source Robotics Founation) has been founded to manage and promote the development of ROS and tools for the robotic world. Well, far from the robots that are used in NASA, which also work with Linux, and other sophisticated robots, now we will focus on some more commercial or close robots:

  • Roomba: What about the iRobot gadget? You sure have one hanging around your house right now. It is a robot vacuum cleaner in charge of keeping the home clean, and specifically the 500 series uses ROS and Linux to keep the floors in your house like jets of gold.
  • Pepper: This one is not so accessible, but maybe it will be soon. It is a humanoid robot in charge of making your stay at the bank more enjoyable. The Japanese have created this robot to distract bank customers while they are being served.
  • Sawyer- This is a robotic arm created by Rethink Robotics for use in industrial environments and to assist humans in making circuits. Surely there is someone who works with one of these ...
  • DronesThese unmanned flying robots that you sure have driven or are thinking of, mostly, except for the cheapest toys and drones, mostly run thanks to Linux.
  • Kitchen robots: yes gentlemen, some kitchen robots also work thanks to Linux. This is the case of Moley, an expert chef created in metal, plastic and electronic circuits.

Like I always say, Linux It is in more places than you can imagine. You are probably now surrounded by systems that work with Linux and you don't know it ...
