How to remove ads from Spotify?

Spotify logo and Tux rocker

Who has not made use of the popular streaming music application SpotifyIt is undoubtedly a great application that allows us to enjoy our favorite artists and be aware of new music releases.

Although there are also other streaming music providers, Spotify is still a favorite in the industry, the application has two modes of which we have the Premium and free version.

With the first one, they give us the possibility of being able to enjoy music at any time, without any ads. and in addition to being able to download it to our devices to be able to use the application without the need to be connected to the network.

While in the free version we have advertising in the application interface as well as ad pauses during playback.

In the case of us who are Linux users and for those who use the free version we can remove the advertising from the interface so that it is cleanerAlthough it is not the most ethical thing to do, it is also annoying to have 24/7 advertising.

Before moving on to how to remove it, I must recommend that it never hurts to contribute with a click on the advertising, as it is the way in which the application support is maintained. So this method I leave it to your consent as well as knowing when to give support through advertising by removing the restriction that we will do next.

For remove spotify ads from Linux we must open a terminal and edit the following file with the following command:

sudo nano /etc/hosts

Now we must add the following lines to the file:

0.0.0.0 pubads.g.doubleclick.net

0.0.0.0 securepubads.g.doubleclick.net

0.0.0.0 gads.pubmatic.com

0.0.0.0 ads.pubmatic.com

0.0.0.0 spclient.wg.spotify.com

Now from here we will no longer see the advertising in the interface, but as I recommend, it never hurts to deactivate it to support maintenance.

Friend, as you say, this is unethical if you want to remove premium paid advertising. Then we complain about the bad support of applications of this style for linux and how they will want to give support if we do this

    1.    Pepito said

It can be done on mac and windows. What does this have to do with Linux?

    2.    latinbooker said

Unfortunately, you're right Christian, many of us Linux users want to get everything for free and that's why the fame of hackers, the real problem is that they make too much of this issue, leaving those who don't have the chance to enjoy a service marginalized. without having to put up with all the hype.

Although on the other hand, it is not that Spotify is gorged with advertising, if anything, one commercial every three or four songs.
So we must also be aware that some advertising is worth a service like this and that if it bothers us or we don't want advertising, we have to pay.

As the saying goes: He who wants it heavenly, let it cost him!

Excellent trick, I remember that there is a hosts file to remove advertisements from newspapers and other sites.
I find it great, not only because of the annoyance, but because it warms up, drains the battery and reduces the useful life of our devices.
    Fuck them!

Difficult decision because this is the only way to profit from the applications. I understand how annoying, but I think advertising in an application is more acceptable than on web pages.

If you want to do things right, block advertising from the browser with Ublock-Origin (it blocks everything).

If we think about it, it is not so bad to do this since the money is not distributed among the people who listen, but to those who generate the most. Directly, I prefer to steal even a thief.

PS: Beware of the desktop application.

I use fedora 30, did what is stated and it works.

But some songs won't play, it gives me problems, I deleted it and it works normally.

It does not work, it is more, it left that it only reprodes 5 seconds and the program was damaged

Kalixto, it didn't work for me, but when I left a music in the middle of playback, I closed it and added the lines mentioned here, I save it and when opening spotify (with the playback in the middle, it does not have to be in the middle , as long as it is not at the beginning) there were no longer any advertisements.

Personally, it doesn't bother me to have advertising, it bothers me that I use the desktop application and every time an ad comes in it freezes and there it stays without hearing the ad or anything and I have to pause and then play to make it work again they put ads every 3 minutes it becomes unbearable to have to go to the pc every time an ad comes in

    By applying this line:

    0.0.0.0 spclient.wg.spotify.com

The player does not work properly, does not play anything

I use Zorin (based on Debian)
