RawTherapee 5.9 arrives with improved compatibility for 130 models and more

RawTherapee

RawTherapee is a cross-platform RAW image processing program

After nearly three years of development, RawTherapee 5.9 release has been published, version in which new tools have been added, as well as improvements, bug fixes and also support for new camera models.

For those unfamiliar with RawTherapee, you should know that it provides a set of tools for color correction, white balance, brightness and contrast, as well as automatic image enhancement and noise removal.

Various algorithms have been implemented for image quality normalization, lighting correction, noise suppression, detail enhancement, additional control of shadows, edge and perspective correction, removing automatic dead pixels and changing the exposure, sharpening, removing scratches and dust marks.

Main news of RawTherapee 5.9

The new version of RawTherapee 5.9 added the support for new cameras, raw formats and color profiles. In total, support for 130 cameras has been improved, including several models Canon EOS, Canon PowerShot, Fujifilm X*, Fujifilm GFX, Leica, Nikon COOLPIX, Nikon D*, Nikon Z*, OLYMPUS, Panasonic DC, Sony DSC and Sony ILCE.

Another novelty that is presented is that it has added a tool to remove stains and small objects (for example, sensor defects and dust particles on the lens), replacing the stain with content from the neighboring area.

In addition to this, it is also mentioned that a local adjustment tool has been added that allows various editing operations to be performed on areas of the image that are selected based on a geometric mask or color, as well as that new histogram construction modes for color inspection: waveform, vectorscope, and RGB parade (waveform, vectorscope, RGB parade).

A new double algorithm to calculate color components that are missing based on the information of the neighboring elements (demosaicing), which allows to reduce the artifacts of the images under artificial lighting.

Added support for the CAM16 color perception model, which replaced the CIECAM02 model and allows you to correct the color of a photo taking into account the perception of color by the human eye.

It is also noted that a new automatic “temperature correlation” method to the white balance adjustment tool (the old method has been renamed "RGB gray").

Of the other changes that stand out from this new version:

  • A white balance pre-processing tool has been added that allows you to apply automatic balance to individual channels or use the white balance parameters registered by the camera.
  • The tool for inverting negatives has been redesigned.
  • Added a tool to automatically fix horizontal or vertical perspective locks.
  • Improved wavelet editing tools at different levels of detail.
  • Added support for saturation adjustment to the haze removal tool.
  • The theme of the interface has been improved and the visibility of the inclusion of tools has been increased.
  • Added the ability to resize the browser ("Editor" tab).
  • The resize tool (Transform tab) now supports long or short border resizing.
  • Added “Centered Square” crop mode to the Crop tool.
