Raspberry Pi + Vulkan = Quake III at 100 FPS

QUake III on Raspberry Pi

Yes, the title seems somewhat amazing, since playing the video game at 100 FPS on a basic desktop computer is somewhat surprising, but if I also tell you that it can be achieved on the Raspberry Pi it is much more surprising, right? Well, that's what an NVIDIA engineer has achieved, with a new "driver or driver »Vulkan for this SBC with which he has managed to run the Quake III video game at that frame rate per second.

It is true that it is a title from two decades ago, but it is still interesting. It can be said that for just over € 30 you have a computer ready to achieve that feat, without having to spend much more money on a gaming PC or much less. That is the new magic that has been achieved with the help of this plate so popular in the community and with the ingenuity of Martin Thomas, the NVIDIA developer I mentioned above ...

For more details, with this "controller" Vulkan has managed to make Quake III run at 100 FPS with a resolution of 1280 × 720 in a Raspberry Pi 3 B +. In addition, the developer assures that it can even reach 1080 resolution points with a speed of 80 frames per second.

Ok ... where's the catch? Well, it is not a driver or controller to use, there are small differences with the normal ones, although it is based on the Vulkan graphics API and is similar to the others. Also, it does not work on current Raspberry Pi 4 models. This pseudo-controller RPi-VK-Driver only works on models 1, 2 and 3.

By the way, you already know that the official Vulkan drivers for Raspberry Pi are being developed by a Spanish company called Igalia, which we have already told you about in previous articles ...
