Raspberry Pi OS was updated to its March version and now uses Linux 5.10

Raspberry Pi OS with Linux 5.10

Another son who surpasses the father. Well, I would be being grossly unfair if I said that, since the operating system formerly known as Raspbian cannot be compared to Debian, but is based on it and its latest version, Raspberry Pi OS 2021-03-04, started using the latest LTS version of the kernel earlier this month. And if I mentioned "other" it is because at least there will be another one that will also surpass it in this regard, since in mid-April Ubuntu 21.04 will be released with Linux 5.11 and Debian 11 is expected for the summer.

This is news that passed us by, and personally I have learned from a published article in another medium. The kernel they have included is not Linux 5.11 as Ubuntu will, but Linux 5.10, launched at the end of 2020 and the one that in many forums, such as Reddit, assures that it will use Bullseye (although I have doubts because, for now and if no one steps forward, it will only be supported until 2022). An updated kernel usually results in improved support, and the XNUMXth version of the fifth series improves support for the Raspberry Pi 400, the raspberry computer that now reads the country of the keyboard format well.

Raspberry Pi OS Highlights 2021-03-04

  • Linux 5.10.7.
  • Support for NVMe to SD devices in the Card Copier utility.
  • The recommended software application switches to using GTK 3.
  • Now load the aes-neon-bs crypto driver on arm64 models to speed up OpenSSL.
  • Adjust the boot order options in the raspi-config utility to improve flexibility.
  • Tony IDE 3.3.5.
  • Armenian and Japanese languages added to various packages.
  • Video composition option has been removed in settings.
  • Various minor fixes.

The existing users can update and take advantage of all the above by updating from the same operating system. For new installations, Raspberry Pi OS 2021-03-04 is available at this link. It can and is recommended to be installed with Raspberry Pi Imager, since in addition to being the official tool, its latest version also allows us to configure the username and other parameters from its new advanced settings.
