The famous firm Purism has announced a new security key called Librem Key, how much was expected by the community. It is a pendrive with which to improve the security of our laptops and that is available for purchase as the first and only smart card based on OpenPGP offered on the market, an innovative security solution that will offer protection during boot system to detect tampering (Head-firmware-integrated tamper evident).
Developers of purism They have not been alone, but have carried out this project in association with Nitrokey. If you're not familiar with it, they are a company known for making open source USB keys to enable secure encryption and signing of data on laptops. And now the result of the association has been the Purism Librem Key dedicated to laptop users of the firm under the Librem brand that you will surely know.
This boot security device will prevent tampering with Purism firm laptops, and are capable of storing keys up to 4096 bit RSA and 512 bit ECC, as well as safely generate new keys directly from the device. This device integrates well with the boot process of laptops for a safe boot on the latest Librem 13 and 15 models.
With the device, users of Purism notebooks will be able to check if someone has tampered with their equipment or software during startup. Taking advantage of the TPM chip, the USB skewer will flash with green light if the equipment has not been tampered with, so the user must trust the system. On the other hand, if it has been tampered with, the light you will see will be red. Incredibly it seems to me something, perhaps not infallible, but interesting that I hope it will be extended to more teams and not only to those of Purism ...
