PureOS launches new stable version, partly in preparation for the release of Librem 5

Stable PureOS

On September 5, Purism ad that the Librem 5 will go on sale soon, on September 24 the first units to be more exact. The company also develops PureOS, a Debian-based operating system that, like Arch Linux, we can install once and receive updates forever. Now, partly because of the arrival of the Librem 5, the company has decided to create and  release a stable version with well-tested components for a large-scale launch.

The new stable version of PureOS looks a lot like the LTS versions or recommended from other systems or software, such as Ubuntu 18.04 or LibreOffice, since v6.3.x exists, v6.2.7 is still recommended for production environments. In other words, we are talking about a release with older components without the most modern features, but also without the glitches that new software can cause.

PureOS launches stable version, with fewer functions but also fewer bugs

The Rolling Release version, the one that updates faster and forever, will continue to be developed. As The Document Foundation does with its LibreOffice, Purism says that the Rolling Release version is intended for all-new enthusiasts and demanding users who don't want to wait to try everything new, but the recommended version to experience less or no failure will be the stable one. Both versions will receive security updates but, as with the rest of the software, those of the Rolling Realease will have been less tested.

Users interested in testing the new stable version of PureOS can do so by downloading its image from this link. If you do not want to take any risk, it is best to try it through a Live Session, something we can do by creating a Live USB or, what I usually do because my equipment allows it, through GNOME Boxes.
