postmarketOS v21.06 Service Pack 4 introduces Phosh 0.14.0 and app improvements

postmarketOS v21.06 Service Pack 4

On specialized Linux blogs like LxA we write a lot of news and articles about Linux software. What we cover the most is desktop software, but also the one with simple boards like the Raspberry Pi (ARM). What we do not want to leave aside is the monitoring of Linux projects for mobiles and tablets, and we do it with the hope that developers also do not abandon and continue to improve the software for these devices day by day. This is what posrmarketOS Open Source Community is doing, who a few hours ago launched postmarketOS v21.06 Service Pack 4.

Major updates to desktop operating systems tend to add many more packages with each new release, especially those that release a version every six months or every two years, but post-marketOS v21.06 Service Pack 4 includes one that alone already deserves worth updating: Phosh 0.14.0. Pho (ne) Sh (ell) 0.14.0 is the latest installment in the mobile version of GNOME, and it introduces major changes.

Highlights of postmarketOS v21.06 Service Pack 4

  • Phosh 0.14.0 provides several enhancements, including support for app splash screens and search buttons for the media player widget.
  • Numberstation 1.0.0 is the 2FA token application that appears in the header image. With the new import / export feature for quickly backing up and restoring keys and moving them between devices, as well as the new HOTP support, it is now considered a full feature. Backup files are accepted in the format of one otpauth: // URL per line. For HOTP support, the keys are based on counters rather than time. Changes have been made to the user interface to avoid incrementing this counter by accident.
  • eg25-manager 0.4.1, the helper daemon for the EG25 modem on the PinePhone, has gotten GNSS assistive support and many small general improvements compared to the version they had previously packed in the stable branch.
  • Pixman is still on the latest official version 0.40.0 from April 2020 (apparently the upstream doesn't release that often). However, the newly merged patch has been chosen to use NEON instructions on ARM64 devices after having it on the Alpine edge for a while. Pixman is a low CPU level composition and drawing library used in many applications, therefore this makes all aarch64 phones a bit more responsive.

postmarketOS v21.06 Service Pack 4 is now available as an update for those who have the operating system installed on their Linux mobile or tablet.
