Pop!_OS will skip a version to focus on the Rust version of Cosmic

Pop!_OS 22.10 will not arrive

Just under 24 hours ago, Canonical released Ubuntu 22.10 and the rest of the Kinetic Kudu family. Now that it is available, distributions based on Canonical's system, such as elementaryOS or Linux Mint, will start releasing new versions of their operating systems, but between them will not be Pop!_OS 22.10. This news is not new, it has been circulating for about a month, and for that reason, because no one has said otherwise in so long, we can now take the news as valid.

On Reddit, a user He launched the question "Is Pop OS going to skip 22.10?", to which he was answered, explaining the reasons, yes. In addition, the answer also said that the six-month update cycle takes a lot of work, so the possibility that Pop!_OS 22.10 is the first of many, or at least the first of some omissions, cannot be ruled out. for improve operating system stability.

Pop!_OS could move to an annual cycle

We are going to focus our development time on the Rust implementation of COSMIC instead of 22.10. We've already deployed our own hardware enablement process and backported essential components like Pipewire, so there's no need to rebase Pop on 22.10.

22.10 is not an LTS version, so if we were to release it, we would be forced to patch and rebase Pop every six months until the next LTS at 24.04. It takes a lot of effort to support multiple versions of Ubuntu, and the 6-month release cycle really eats up development time and product stability.

We would provide better value by spending more time improving 22.04 LTS and focusing our efforts on building the COSMIC desktop that we envisioned. Progress in COSMIC continues at a steady pace.

The reason they have given for skipping 22.10 is that they are going to focus on the Rust implementation of Cosmic. The rest of the message must remain in the kind of "complaint" or "criticism" of the six-month development model, which has led to rumors that they are going to change the cycle to an annual one. After reading "22.10 is not an LTS version", I think you have to be optimistic to think that they will release a version every year and not one every two years, although this may be a one-time thing.

Or perhaps, the optimist is the one who believes that they will release updates only every two years and will take advantage of the rest of the time to polish what already exists. Debian is doing well this way, and many think that the good releases of Ubuntu are those that come out in the Aprils of even-numbered years, while the others are like versions in which they test the new features that will be included in the next LTS.

Whatever happens in the future, Pop!_OS 22.10 will not see the light of day.

It seems good to me that distros do things differently, especially if it is to improve and their cosmic desktop looks very good, it is not that much is lost updating every 6 months, 1 year if I would think about it a little more, but I understand why
