Pop! _OS 21.04 now available with its new environment «Cosmic»

Pop! _OS 21.04

Just over two months ago, System76 spoke to us of a new graphical environment in which I was working. It had to arrive in June, along with the new version Pop! _OS 21.04 which is based on Ubuntu 21.04 Hirsute Hippo, but it wasn't until this Tuesday that made official the launch. The system is still based on GNOME, but the available gestures don't look much like GNOME 40 and it doesn't use the famous desktop as we know it.

The desktop that System76 just released in Pop! _OS 21.04 is called Cosmic, and in the release note, whose link you have above, give some details of what it offers. In several videos we can see how the workspaces work, how one passes between them or the window manager that sometimes resembles that of i3 or Sway.

Pop! _OS 21.04 highlights

  • Linux 5.11.
  • Based on Ubuntu 21.04.
  • New graphical environment Cosmic, whose initials come from Computer Operating System Main Interface Components.
  • Optional minimize and maximize buttons for windows.
  • Possibility of stacking windows with the mouse by clicking and dragging the stacked windows to reorder them.
  • Possibility of updating the Recovery partition.
  • Improved search function.
  • New plugin system so that we can create our own.

Existing users can upgrade to Pop! _OS 21.04 from the settings or from the terminal, the commands being sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade if the second option is chosen. For new installations, two ISOs are available, one normal and other for computers with NVIDIA cards.

In many media, we can read that Pop! _OS it's a great alternative, something that I share although it is difficult for me to get out of KDE that I like so much. For users who use GNOME and feel that it is lacking in features or heavy, I think it is recommended that you give the System76 system a try.
