Plasma 5.25 is now available for Kubuntu 22.04

Kubuntu 22.04 with Plasma 5.25

If you are a Kubuntu 22.04 user, it can already be installed plasma 5.25. The project posted on Twitter information about what was going on, and basically it was that there were people who wanted to use the latest version of Plasma in the latest Kubuntu LTS, and have been heard. The novelty is that they have enabled a special repository to install the software, remembering that this should be the user's decision, not a general update for all users of a Long Term Support release.

The Kubuntu team will offer Plasma 5.25 in the backports-extra repository, so users can be well informed before updating. So what changes the most with respect to the traditional method is that you have to use another repository.

Plasma 5.25 on Kubuntu 22.04

Providing backports from new Plasma versions to an LTS version should always be an 'opt-in' process, however we are aware that many of our users are now used to adding our PPA backports as a matter of course, so for an LTS version some extra caution is required in what we make available there.

They also explain that this backports-extra should receive Plasma, Gear and Frameworks updates:

As usual with our PPAs, there is a caveat that the PPA may receive additional updates and new versions of KDE Plasma, Gear (Apps) and Frameworks, as well as other necessary applications and libraries. Users should always review proposed updates to decide if they want to receive them.

To update with this method/repository, open a terminal and type:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports-extra && sudo apt full-upgrade -y

After typing the above command, the new packages will appear, either in the terminal or in Discover, if you prefer to use the official KDE software center. Users who prefer to stay on the Kubuntu LTS as it was released last February do not need to do anything.
