PinePhone, a Plasma phone capable of running desktop applications

PinePhone running GIMP

The mobile phones that we like the most do it mainly for their software. Part of the blame is on applications that make things much easier for us, among which we have the best Twitter, Instagram or Facebook clients or games designed to be used with the fingers and sensors of the terminal. Other phones, such as pinephone of Pine64, they do not have the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android), but they do have other options available, better?

At Martijn Braam's YouTube channel An interesting video has been published, the one you have below these lines. In it we can see a PinePhone, which uses a Plasma-based operating system that they have called postmarketOS, running desktop applications. Basically, what we see is a phone in which we can use programs that we use on computers, such as the famous image editor GIMP. Of course, right now it does not do it perfectly.

PinePhone running desktop apps

Among the desktop applications that this PinePhone runs we have Firefox, the aforementioned GIMP, a couple of LibreOffice or Quaternion apps. But there is a problem that is obvious: although all app functions are available, apps are not adapted to such small screens, so it is difficult to navigate through the menus and perform certain (in fact all) tasks.

The PinePhone can be booked since last November 15. What you can ask for right now is the BraveHeart edition, which Pine64 itself says should be only for developers and "Early Adopters". In fact, the company says that what will arrive does not even have the operating system installed, in part because everything is still at an early stage. Probably, in a few months, they will do something to make the desktop apps look better on the PinePhone, among which could be being able to run the applications in landscape mode.

Do you find this interesting that the PinePhone can do?

Its success will depend not only on its performance, but on the target audience that it can reach and obviously on the price, since similar projects skyrocket and make their acquisition impossible.
    Greetings.
