Photoflare, an open source image editor in the purest Paint style

photoflare

When we talk about image editing programs in Linux, I think I am not wrong when I say that the most popular is GIMP. Although it is also hated by many, it is the tool that many of us use to perform from simple touch-ups to some more professional ones, but there are users who need something simpler. Among those simple programs, there has always been a very important one, a Microsoft Paint of which photoflare, the protagonist of this post, seems to be a clone.

Photoflare is not one of a kind. In fact, in this article We are talking about up to 10 applications that do more or less the same thing. What happens is that this tool is more modern, it has some special functions and its design is more visual. Next we will explain what its strengths are and how to install the software, something that we will do by adding the developer's repository.

How to install and what Photoflare offers us

As we have explained, PhotoFlare is available from your developer's repository, so installing it is as simple as adding it and installing the package. We will do it by opening a terminal and typing these commands (in Ubuntu and derivatives):

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:photoflare/photoflare-stable
sudo apt update && sudo apt install photoflare

There is also a version for Arch Linux at this link.

Among what this application offers us, we have:

  • Color settings (brightness, contrast, etc.).
  • Crop, flip, rotate transformations.
  • Resize and Scale Text Tool.
  • Shape tool.
  • Magic wand / selector.
  • Color picker.
  • Photo filters.
  • Gradients
  • Brushes
  • Batch processing.

Regarding its development, it is an open source image editor created using C ++ and Qt. It is more powerful than Microsoft Paint and many of the clones mentioned in the previous link, but it is very far from other more professional tools such as the well-known GIMP. Photoflare and similar applications are designed for those who do not need to do very demanding editing.
