During the last few months we have seen several educational distributions disappear little by little from the Gnu / Linux landscape. The last to fall was Edubuntu but during this 2018 there will be many more (unfortunately). From the OpenSUSE team we have learned that OpenSUSE Education will disappear with the release of openSUSE Leap 15.
OpenSUSE Education is based on OpenSUSE Leap 42 and with the recasting of this distribution, the educational flavor will disappear, unless the Community wants to maintain this official flavor of the distribution.
The official flavor of OpenSUSE contains more than 460 educational packages, a high number of packages that requires a lot of work on the part of the developers to maintain and hence one of the reasons for the project to be abandoned. Despite this, the distribution will be left open to the Community and it will be up to the Community to decide whether or not OpenSUSE Education goes ahead.
OpenSUSE Leap 15 will mark the end of openSUSE Education or a new beginning
The official abandonment will take place when OpenSUSE Leap 15 is released, therefore there are still days until this sad news. Time in which you will have to decide whether to continue or not. In any case, it seems that such a fact will be irremediable since if it was a lot of work for the development team, this means that OpenSUSE Education has a small community and it would be very difficult to find a group of people who take charge of the official flavor.
On the other hand, a result like Edubuntu would be the most correct. Namely, OpenSUSE will be maintained and then each user will install the packages they need, packages that will be kept by the developer. This will be a great advantage for many users and also for developers. Although we have to say that it is still sad that large projects like OpenSUSE Education disappear or have problems in their development.
