Open source single player games

Neverball screenshot

Neverball is an open source single player game. We must move a ball to collect coins.

In these times of multiplayer and online games, there is also room for other types of proposals. That's why we do a small list of open source single player games.

Fortunately, the time passed when the Linux gaming proposal was very poor. Although the situation is not perfect today, there are reasons to be optimistic. Meanwhile, you know what to entertain yourself with.

Endless-SKY

Endless sky es a 2d combat and trading game set in space. It is similar to the classic Escape Velocity series.

You can explore other star systems. It is possible to earn money by trading, transporting passengers or completing missions. With the proceeds you can buy a better ship, upgrade armaments or upgrade your current ship.

If you like fighting, you can blow up pirate ships or take sides in a civil war.

Are you a Star Trek fan? Leave human space behind and go looking for friendly aliens whose culture is more civilized than yours.

Downloads are available for Mac OS X and Windows. Many Linux distributions are also supported.

Neverball

Of the open source single player games I know of, this is one of the most addictive.

Neverball is based on the Super Monkey Ball franchise. The game consists of moving a ball to a goal while collecting coins. There are a hundred different scenarios. Sometimes it takes a certain number of coins to complete the stage.

The great innovation is that instead of directing the ball, what we control with the mouse is the stage. The way you move the mouse determines the angle of the ground and the direction the ball is heading inward. This makes getting the coins more difficult than it sounds.

Neverball is in the repositories of different distributions and also available for Windows and Mac.

astromenace

This is a more traditional game. If you miss the space combat of the 90s, this is your game. With 3d scenarios and 2d combats, you must protect the galaxy from the horde of invading ships that want to eliminate us.

The program allows you to switch from arcade mode to simulator mode with various customization options.

We can install astromenace from the repositories. There are also versions for Windows and Mac.

freedroidrpg

The game takes place in a world destroyed by a conflict between robots and their human masters. We must guide Tux in una quest to save the world from rogue robot killers who know no mercy.  During the entire game we have absolute freedom to choose the path we want to follow.

freedroidrpg allows ranged or melee combat. In that sense, it is quite similar to the proprietary game Diablo. It is also possible to modify the behavior of enemy robots. We can use more than 50 different types of objects and fight against countless adversaries.

An advanced dialogue system provides a background for story and role-playing situations.

The developers promise fun for more than 10 hours.

As of now, this game is not in the repositories. Both the Linux version, the Windows version, you must compile it. However, the developer's website explains how to do it.

Super tux kart

A game that is never lacking in most posts of this type. It's that the graphics are really good, the challenges are fun, and the learning curve is low.

The approach is simple, you choose as a driver the mascot of an open source project, you choose a type of test and a track or championship. The tests are; normal race, race against the clock or grand prize.

Super tux kart forces you to meet the easiest challenges in order to face the most difficult ones. At one time there was a trick to unlock them, but it doesn't work anymore.

From the Internet you can download more tracks and vehicles.

The program is available for Linux in the repositories, in addition to the Flatpak and Snap stores. It also has versions for Windows, Mac, and Android.

I finish by clarifying that this is a simple list of suggestions. I love Neverball and Super Tux Kart, the others are there because they meet the condition of being open source single player games. If there are any you want to add to the list, you already know how the comment form works.

I would add to the Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup both in its graphic version (crawl-tiles) and in text (crawl). It's a great roguelike with good difficulty, plus it has a large community of players. It can also be played both via telnet or ssh and in the browser.

Another one that I would mention is GNURobbo, to mention a classic among puzzles. It is very entertaining.

    Regards!

If you put Neverball, also put Neverputt, which is from the same company and is a very addictive miniature golf.
