Open education: economic savings and its advantages for students

Collage of words relating to education

Open education It is a teaching doctrine that aims to educate from open resources, whether they are courses such as MOOCs, software with open licenses, textbooks published under open licenses such as Creative Commons, and other similar teaching materials that could include devices or open hardware like the Raspberry Pi, Arduino, etc. The philosophy from which they start is the belief that these technologies promote flexible learning and help share ideas and practices. One of the first pioneers in this field was Dr. Robin DeRosa ...

In fact, there are important educational centers that follow this open education methodology, one of the best known and most prestigious is the Open University of the United Kingdom. It is considered the first university to follow this model and was created in 1969. This was followed by other institutions such as the famous and prestigious MIT or MIT in the United States, where Richard Stallman came from… Coincidence? Nowadays there are many more centers and with the arrival and expansion of MOOC and platforms like Moodle it has become even more popular. Few are those who have not taken any of these free online courses on any subject. Even some government ministries are validating these courses and taking them into account for job offers and job improvements, although they obviously still do not carry the same weight as a university degree or other official certifications obviously.

So open source or free philosophy transcends beyond software and hardware, and little by little it is taking over other areas such as education, a very important sector because of it our future depends. So if free technologies or open licenses can help us educate, welcome! The advantages? The same ones that we all know about open source and free licenses, such as the freedom to share and collaborate, economic savings, etc.
