NVIDIA buys ARM for $ 40.000 billion, but promises that everything will stay the same

NVIDIA buys ARM

For large companies to buy from smaller companies or their projects is not unusual. Giants like Google or Apple do it constantly to improve their services, their hardware or their software. What is less common is that what is acquired is something much more important, and that is what happened a few hours ago: NVIDIA has purchased ARM, but the exact figure is not known, beyond knowing that it is between 40.000 and 45.000 million dollars.

How could it be otherwise in a purchase of this size, both companies they had been holding conversations for a while, negotiations that, according to rumors, in the past they also had with Apple, among others such as TSMC or Foxconn, who would also have been interested in the purchase. In the end, who has won the race has been NVIDIA, who is famous for something is for its graphics cards.

NVIDIA says ARM will continue to open license

"As part of NVIDIA, ARM will continue to operate its open license model while maintaining the global customer neutrality that has been critical to its success, with 180 billion chips shipped to date by its licensees."

As for users who prefer open-licensed hardware, they shouldn't worry for the moment, as NVIDIA says nothing will change ARM, neither its license, nor its headquarters, which is currently in Cambridge. And if nothing changes, ARM customers, including Apple and Samsung, should not worry too much, but ask their respective CEOs privately what they think of all this to find out how they feel. Personally, I would like more to know Tim Cook's (real) opinion on this, since the apple company recently announced that its computers will switch to using ARM.

Regarding the intentions of NVIDIA, it is clear that one of them is to make money, but they also mention that they want to build a supercomputer next-generation artificial intelligence that will be powered by ARM CPUs. With all this, we hope that NVIDIA fulfills its promise and does not do like Facebook with WhatsApp, which said that it would not change anything and, although users are noticing little, they are integrating it with other services such as their Messenger or Instagram, which makes it easy to snoop what interests us.
