Nova 2015: the Cuban Linux distribution

Nova 2015 is the new version of a GNU / Linux distribution of Cuban origin developed by the University of Informatics Sciences of this country. This distro is developed and maintained by students and professors of said entity, as well as members of other institutions to support the migration to free software in Cuba.
The development team of this distribution managed to obtain a donation of a Yeelong notebook designed and produced in China by the Lemote company to partner with this company in the field of hardware. Then they would also reach an agreement with Gedeme Electronics (a company that assembles computer equipment in Cuba) to continue having development teams.
From the beginning to the present, Nova has been advancing step by step and is currently in a quite mature stage and available for 32 and 64 bits on x86 platforms. It is quite light and can be downloaded in three editions (Server, Lightweight and Desktop) LiveCD for those who want to try it.
This distro brings with it a series of parallel developments such as Guano (a lightweight desktop environment), Summon (application installer), Serere (Nova installation system), a genuine control panel worked in Nova and finally Capoeira and Ecumenix (for integration with Microsoft Windows desktops).
In the Nova 2015 distro, which is being developed, we are working to create a new shell to leave GNOME (by default in the current versions) and create our own alternative for the desktop. In this sense, they have opted for another Cuban development called MoonLight DE (a popular lightweight desktop environment in development).

I think it is a good IDEA ... although they should incorporate PlayOnLinux so that Cubans leave Windows starting with the same students from the University of Computer Sciences.
Another thing they do not say is that Nova is based the last time in 2010 they had left Gentoo for Ubuntu which I did not like but it makes you happy and they have results so I CONGRATULATE you.
I stick with the distro that use RPM and not DEB believe me.
Greetings to all and I think you will be successful, keep working.

Taking care of having your own GNU distribution is great, but these days it is not something that achieves great success in isolation. It is necessary to take into account the proprietary social networks such as Facebook and Gmail, which are espionage tools of the US imperialist government. So you have to look for free and viable alternatives to these networks.

The site https://prism-break.org/es/ offers dozens of options for each of the major proprietary tools.

One that I like a lot is Diaspora - https://diasporafoundation.org/ which is a replacement for Facebook that is based on Free Software and that has the concept of operating in a federated way, that is, in a distributed way where each server runs autonomously and the whole forms the great social network.

It would be very smart if Cuba had several Diaspora servers to allow network communication over the Internet to not be a threat to the philosophical, social and political foundations of the revolution!

    Greetings Free!

I think the 2017 version is far superior to this one. Although they still have some details to polish, they are on the right track.
