My list of must-have portable apps

We make a list of the best portable applications.

In this post I will list a list of must-have portable apps. Of course this is my opinion and you don't have to accept it

As I explained in a previous article, portable applications are those that do not need to be installed, they are very useful to have on a flash drive and use them on any computer or even a cloud storage service.

My list of must-have apps

Mozilla Firefox

The readers of Linux Adictos saben que no soy un fanático de Mozilla, pero si necesito navegar en la web conservando mi privacidad sin dudas que se trata de una buena opción. En Portable Firefox it is possible to install some plugins, although it seems that the data synchronization between the portable and normal versions does not work at all.

LibreOffice

La portable version of LibreOffice iIncludes all the applications of the regular version including the database creator and the drawing tool. The distinctive feature of LibreOffice is its compatibility with multiple file formats, not only with Microsoft Office but also with WordPerfect or Lotus. When exporting, you can do it with PDF and Epub, among others.

Abiword and Gnumeric

If you don't need a complete office suite or perfect compatibility with Microsoft Office and other office suites, you can install these two programs of the GNOME ecosystem. Abiword is a word processor Gnumeric a spreadsheet. Both work independently.

XAMPP

If you need to test a website locally or show it to a client without uploading it to a server, this is the app for you. XAMPP includes:

  • Apache web server.
  • MySQL database.
  • Support for PHP and the PEAR package manager.
  • PERL support.
  • OpenSSL security libraries.
  • phpMyAdmin database manager.
  • Webalizer web statistics software.
  • Filezilla FTP server.
  • Mercury mail server.

The Gimp

I'm not sure if there are so many online photo editors keeping this image manipulation program on the list is justified. Although you always have to take privacy into account. The Gimp It has all the editing features we need plus some basic drawing tools.

OBS Studio

Suppose you have to do a live video broadcast and you need a higher level of post-production than the cell phone can give you. But, you don't have a laptop and you're not home. OBS Studio It allows you to make live broadcasts using some of the most popular streaming services and combining different multimedia resources.

OpenShot

If you are not going to broadcast live and just want to edit videos to upload them to a platform, an excellent option es OpenShot. It is a very easy to use non-linear video editor. It is possible to add static and animated titles and images and apply multiple effects.

Scribus

Is an application for the creation of desktop publications. In addition, it allows the creation of PDF forms that can be completed and printed.

Sigil

Es a tool andspecialized for the visual creation of books in Epub format. It supports the incorporation of metadata, style sheets and multimedia content.

Copyq

Here we have a clipboard with advanced features. The program monitors the host system's clipboard and pastes the content into custom tabs. It works with all kinds of formats and allows you to label them and add notes to them.

qbittorent

It's a torrent client very light, but with multiple functions:

  • Torrent search on public and private sites.
  • Support for DHT, Peer Exchange, Full encryption, Magnet/BitComet URIs and other Bittorent extensions.
  • Remote control via web interface.
  • Set priorities between peers, trackers and torrents.
  • IP filtering.
  • Torrent creation tool.

YUMI-UEFI

With this program we can create a multiboot pendrive containing operating systems and tools.

VLC

Perhaps the best player multimedia of the open source world. Work with multiple formats and convert files between them.

In addition, it can play online content and display subtitles in different formats.

I clarified in the previous article that they work fantastic under WINE

If you like to use WINE, then better use WAMP, when I worked designing sites in PHP, from one PC to another with different versions (and configurations) of XAMPP there could be instabilities, with WAMP that does not happen, it is designed POKA-YOKE style so that less experienced users can install it and regardless of the PC and version (and even XAMPP-style software package), it generally works the same every time (unless the changes from one supported version of PHP to another are brutal). It would be good if you did an article XAMPP vs WAMP since you are working on using WINE…
