MX Linux 23.3 upgrades its base to Debian 12.5

MX Linux 23.3

New maintenance update for this distribution that, if we were based only on what DistroWatch shows, we would say that it is the most popular option in the Linux world. And it would be for a long time, since It's been at number 1 for eons.. What we have in hand this time is MX Linux 23.3, the third version of the "Libretto" that every time I see it I read it as the name of the company that develops RetroArch.

Like the Debian on which it is based, this is not a completely new version and there is no need to reinstall from scratch. What they have released are new images with more updated software, among which we have its base, Debian 12.5, and its kernel. What comes is the list with the most outstanding news from MX Linux 23.3 Libretto.

Most notable new features of MX Linux 23.3 Libretto

  • Based on Debian 12.5.
  • “build-essential” packages now included in the ISO, for those users who need to compile a driver and cannot connect. This was already the case in 23.2.
  • When using the OEM mode of the installer, the user will be able to select a system language before the installation begins, so that the installation is performed in the chosen language. This is set by default in the RPI Respin version.
  • Pipewire 1.0 (1.0.4 available in the testing repository).
  • Updated manual, and manual now divided into specific packages for each language.
  • The MX Locale tool includes a function to remove all manual packages except the current system default language.
  • Added zstd compression option to live-remaster (antiX live system).
  • systemd is usable on the live system in a rudimentary way via the bootstrap code init=/lib/systemd/systemd. There will be unmount errors on shutdown, but by the time they occur the file system should already be read-only.
  • Many many language updates

As for kernels, the Xfce, KDE and flubox standard edition ISOs now use Linux 6.1.90. AHS has switched to Linux 6.8.9 liquourix. MX Raspberry Respin has also been updated with the latest packages available in the MX and RPiOS repositories.
