Mozilla closes Firefox Send to investigate what is happening and improve the service

Firefox Send Closed

About a month ago I had to send several large files from a Linux PC to a Windows PC. Taking into account that options like ShareDrop they are not as fast as they should or would like, I decided to do it with Firefox Send, and it works very well, at least if our internet connection is fast. The problem is, it seems that not only do I think it works quite well, but people with worse intentions have been thinking about it too.

For those who do not know, Firefox Send is something like WeTransfer: a service With which we can send files over the internet of up to 2.5GB if we are registered or 1GB without Firefox account. If we access la web, for days we have seen something like what is at the top of this article: a message that tells us that is temporarily unavailable while working on improving the product.

Firefox Send has been used to send malware

The reason seems to be that they have been taking advantage of it to distribute malware. A) Yes they explain it at ZDNet, who asked Mozilla several questions about it and if they were going to implement a mechanism to report abuses. Shortly after this, the service stopped working; the web cannot be entered in any way, which means that the download links are also not available.

We will temporarily take Firefox Send out of service while we make product improvements. Before relaunching, we will add an abuse reporting mechanism to augment the existing feedback form and require all users who wish to share content using Firefox Send to register with a Firefox account.

Until they reopen the service, we can't be sure what changes they will make. They do mention that will require anyone who wants to use it to have a Firefox account. In addition, it is expected that they will add the reporting mechanism and, probably, some antivirus so that malware cannot be distributed from Firefox Send. Until then, we will have to go back to using other alternatives.
