Mozilla adds K-9 Mail so that Thunderbird has a mobile version

K-9 Mail App

K-9 Mail app on the Google App Store

It had to happen. I'm going to speak highly of the Mozilla Foundation, because for once they did something right. The news that Mozilla is adding K-9 so that Thunderbird has a mobile version is excellent for users of open source programs on mobile devices.

Why is Mozilla adding K-9?

Thunderbird, an email client that comes with a large number of Linux distributions and with the proprietary office suite Softmaker Office, was not spared from drift by the Mozilla Foundation and, in fact, there was talk of setting it up as an independent project. However, its development continued and this June 28 will publish its anniversary update.

K-9 mail

It is an open source client for mobile devices focused on facilitating the reading of large volumes of email.. It works with the IMAP protocol and has support for GPG & PGP/MIME encryption. You can work with multiple accounts with notifications for each and a unified inbox. Signatures can be used and dark theme can be applied.

Agreement

Mozilla obtained the trademark rights and source code for K-9 Mail, including its GitHub repository. This means that the mobile version of Thunderbird will essentially be built on top of the K-9 Mail app that users are already familiar with. To ease the transition, K-9 Mail project maintainer Christian Ketterer (also known as cketti) will join the Thunderbird staff. Over time, when the team deems the primary look and feel goals (such as mobile-to-desktop sync, Thunderbird account auto-configuration, and message filter support) have been achieved, K-9 Mail will change its name to Thunderbird.

Current K-9 Mail users will not need to make any changes.

Changes in the project

Thunderbird is now the legal home of K-9 Mail. Consequently, all donations that previously went to K-9 now go to the Thunderbird project. In turn, Thunderbird will take care of further development of the application.

The source code repository will be moved to the Thunderbird organization on GitHub. The app on Google Play will be moved to a different publisher account. The forum could be combined with the one Thunderbird uses for the desktop application.
