MATE 1.22 now available. These are its most outstanding news

Mate 1.22

Victor Kareh has had the pleasure of announce el release MATE 1.22. For those who are not very up to date, MATE is the new way of referring to GNOME 2, the graphical environment that Ubuntu used for years until it made the leap to Unity. We remember that Ubuntu now uses GNOME 3 and that this move made Ubuntu GNOME cease to exist. What does exist is Ubuntu MATE, which looks like a "classic Ubuntu" and which became part of the official team in October 2015.

This release comes with many new features, although most, as usual, are small changes that we cannot include in a post. Yes, we can mention the most outstanding novelties, among which we have a MATE Panel that has received major changes, as one that allows it to work properly with the Wayland display backend. Below you have the list of new features, as well as a count of the changes introduced in MATE 1.22.

Most outstanding news

  • El MATE panel o MATE Panel has been rebuilt to make it work with the backend from the Wayland screen. The display applet has been completely updated, allowing better control of the monitor directly from the panel. The timer applet enjoys better mouse integration. Wanda Fish now works correctly on HIDPI displays.
  • Support for "metacity-themes" has been updated to version 3 in the Marco window manager. Window and desk switchers have been modernized to make them more visually appealing.
  • El session manager now terminate all processes correctly in systemd.
  • Have carried various programs to Python 3, among which are the Eye of MATE libraries, mate-menus y python-box.
  • Case, the file manager, can now display notifications for operations that take a long time. It's optional.
  • Eye of MATE includes a redesigned sidebar and improves image metadata support.
  • Eyelashes on Feather now have the ability to switch with keyboard shortcuts or by doing scroll with the mouse.
  • Calculator now supports up to 15 characters of precision. Support for copying and pasting has also been improved somewhat.
  • Some major shortcut changes have been added, such as support for different types of media keys such as Bluetooth, WiFi, Touchpads, and killswitches. This is especially good on modern computers, and I comment on this because in my previous laptop I missed being able to put the equipment in airplane mode from the key intended for it. I needed it because I had problems with the WiFi and these problems were solved by turning off and on the WiFi.

MATE 1.22 has received affection

Some components have received some affection, as most of their projects have migrated from dbus-glib a GDBus. They have also improved stability across many of their projects by eliminating excessive memory consumption. They have removed leftover or obsolete code and updated it to the latest versions of GTK. And all his projects now use Travis CI to ensure builds clean in some of its most important distributions.

Kill 1.22 not yet available in the official repositories and it seems that neither is it in the project. In their informative note they tell us that to use any of the above you have to go to the download page and perform the manual installation of each and every one of the packages if you want the full experience or choose only one / s.

Mate 1.22 is expected to be available in the next few weeks And it is not ruled out that Ubuntu MATE19.04 arrives in time to use the latest version of this graphical environment. We remember that the first beta of Disco Dingo has not yet been launched, so we cannot rule out this possibility. Would you like to try MATE 1.22?
