Today March 14, Martin Wimpress, developer of the MATE desktop, announced the availability of MATE 1.18, the latest and new version of the popular desktop that reminds us of Gnome 2.
However, this version has little of the old Gnome 2, keeping only the appearance and adding new functions that will help the user to be more productive with the desktop as well as have a more powerful and faster desktop if possible with this new version.
MATE 1.18 no longer has a GTK 2 library, being transition process to GTK 3 libraries completed. In addition, new functions have been added and better support for elements such as the keyboard or the mouse, making it possible, for example, for the user to close tabs with the middle mouse button.
MATE 1.18 is now available, with new features and faster
The code for certain MATE applications and functions has been polished in MATE 1.18, making the desktop faster than previous versions or adding new functions. This is the case of Atril, the application to view files that now allows viewing not only documents or images but also comics. In some cases, as in Pluma, this process has allowed the program to move forward and incorporate libraries, leaving behind other older libraries based on C and Python.
MATE 1.18 is now available from your official websiteHowever, in our distribution it will take a little longer. Except rolling release distributions, which will be incorporated in a matter of hoursFor the rest of the distributions and users who use them, they have to wait for the next version of the distribution to have MATE 1.18. Something that can be annoying for many, but it will also make our distribution more secure if possible because it will incorporate the solution to known and not so known bugs of this version. In any case, but you can wait, I recommend you go through the official website.
