Maru OS is already Free Software !!

MaruOS

We have been talking about a project called Maru OS for months, a project aimed at creating a convergent environment between mobile and a Gnu / Linux distribution. We can finally say that Maru OS is now Free Software.

Although the project leaders intended to do the entire Free Software project, the truth is that so far it was not free software and this made only the Nexus 5 compatible with this project.

Recently in the project blog the news of the code release was published, a release under GPL that will allow anyone to develop Maru OS for other Android phones. As we have said, Maru OS only works for Nexus 5 but they are already working on images for Motorola, Samsung and LG that will allow more Android mobiles to use Debian as their desktop operating system.

Maru OS is released to reach more Android phones

In addition to being institutionalized as Free Software, Maru OS already has an official website improved where we will find the code, the installation image for the Nexus 5 and exhaustive information about the Maru OS project.

The truth is that the project technologically does not offer anything new that does not allow the Live-CD; The only difference is that the Debian system will not be on a pendrive but on the internal memory of the mobile, something that speeds things up a lot, but we must not forget that we will still need items like a dock in which to connect both the monitor and the different gadgets necessary to be able to use Maru OS as a development and work environment.

In any case that a Software project like Maru OS becomes Free Software is something very positive not only for the user but also for the entire Community and more for the project as it will revitalize and improve it significantly.

And we continue with the same, FREE SOFTWARE IS NOT THE SAME AS OPEN SOURCE! Linux has the GPL and that is not why it is Free ...

Explain yourself. If the license is clearly GPL-GNU Public License, then. Why isn't it free software?

Could you explain the difference for those we don't know? the differences.

PS: It seems that this site takes a long time to show / publish comments. Who knows why, it does make a bad impression.

Free software and open source are not the same thing. Free software (with a GPL license for example) grants the user the 4 freedoms of the SL: access, use for any purpose, study and modification, and free redistribution of changes. While open source only gives access to the code, facilitating its study but without any freedom over it.
