LXQt 0.17.0 has arrived with panel improvements and these other changes

LXQt 0.17.0

Just under six months after the earlier version, Hong Jeng Yee and the rest of the LXDE development team have released LXQt 0.17.0. This is a major update, but we must bear in mind that we are talking about simple graphical environments, so the changes are not as striking as those introduced in GNOME, much less than those included in the new editions of Plasma in the one that I love to move.

But just because there aren't any flashy changes doesn't mean they're absent, and LXQt 0.17.0 has come with a bottom panel option that makes it act like a dock, in part. The option we are talking about will make that, when a window is maximized, the bottom panel will be hidden, something that personally I see more interesting in the big docks and less in the smaller ones, in fact I don't use it, but it is an option that I have been seeing all my life and now it is also in this graphical environment.

Highlights of LXQt 0.17.0

  • New option that will automatically hide the bottom panel when a window is maximized or placed on top of it.
  • Support for displaying file creation date in file manager.
  • Support for non-LXQt applications to save their last settings when a session ends.
  • Time-of-use displays for power and battery have been added to the power manager.
  • Launchers can now be created from the file manager tools menu.
  • Improved support for SVG.
  • The opening of the mixed selection of files with different types of mime has been improved.
  • Natural keyboard navigation has been added to the desktop.
  • Improvements in different QT applications, such as QTerminal, LXImage or LXQt Archive Manager.
  • Complete list of changes, in your GitHub page.

The release of LXQt 0.17.0 it's official, but, as always in these cases, right now it is only available in code form. The developers of the different distributions that use this graphical environment will be adding the new version in the coming weeks or months.

Seeing movement in new and old projects is an indicator of good health. Seeing that the wheel is reinvented over and over again and the changes are basic is devastating.
