LivePatch on Disco Dingo: the promise that was never kept

Without LivePatch

Last March, my partner Diego wrote an article saying that Ubuntu 19.04 would contribute nothing. I don't quite agree if we take into account that Disco Dingo is more fluid than previous versions, but he was right in terms of LivePatch. Canonical's system for updating the kernel without having to reboot was announced as a novelty on Disco Dingo, but what had to work for the first time in a non-LTS version remained a dead letter.

En Launchpad have come to treat it as a bug and, in my opinion, they have done so because the novelty was announced. Apparently, Canonical backed down at some point and the option appears, but as unavailable. It even seems "funny" to me, in quotes, that they have included the application or shortcut in the applications menu, just to leave us long teeth when we enter and see what it says is not available in this system.

LivePatch, at the moment, is still only available in LTS versions

LivePatch is an option that desktop systems will inherit from the Server version of Ubuntu, but it seems that we will still have to wait at least 5 more months to use it in versions with 9 months support. To activate it we have to go to auth.livepatch.canonical.com, log in, receive a token and enter it on a command line. This has been the case until now and it seems that it will continue to be the case in the future, with the difference that the package canonical-livepatch It should already be installed on the system and of course supported by it.

On supported systems, we can use the same token in up to three computers with X-buntu operating systems. Its use will be free unless we use it on more computers or as a company. The problem or the questions that remain are: Will the option reach the non-LTS versions in the future? Be that as it may, Disco Dingo had little to offer and having a candy taken from us that we were already savoring does not help to think that it is a great launch. But hey, we will always have its fluency.
