Stack Overflow the largest and most trusted community of developers, has published the results of its annual survey which took place in January of this year.
With a participation of more than 100,000 developers, the annual survey included many topics of interest, from 'good practices' in programming to artificial intelligence. The results have shown that some operating systems and technologies have become more popular than in previous years.
According to the survey, JavaScript remains the programming language for six years in a row, back-end is the most common mode of development, more than 80% of the participants program as a hobby and 92.9% are men, and Node.js is the framework most used by developers.
MySQL and SQL Server remain the most used database, Rust is the most loved programming language for the third year in a row, Redis is the most loved database for the second year in a row, and Visual Studio Code unseated Visual Studio as the most popular development environment.
Linux is the most used platform among developers
To everyone's surprise, Linux has surpassed Windows as the most widely used operating system to develop, according to the Stack Overflow survey. In numbers, Linux is used by 48.3% of developers, compared to 32.9% last year.
Regarding Windows, its percentage fell from 41.0% in 2017 to 35.4% this year, on desktop and server. Android is in third place with 29% followed by MacOS which has obtained 17.9%, followed only 2% behind by Rasperry Pi with 15.9%.
The survey also shows that Amazon's web services, Amazon AWS, are more popular than Google's platform and Microsoft Azure. Stack Overflow has a lot more data from your survey in its official Web site.
