Linux Mint will compile its own version of Chromium and follow the development of its app for IPTV

Chromium on Linux Mint

It has been several months in a row that Clement Lefebvre and his team have been telling us about Chromium in Linux Mint. The first thing they told us is that they refused to use the official version, that is, their Snap package; later added a DEB version to their repositories, but this one came directly from Debian. This week, Lefebvre has returned to give news about his Chromium, and things are going to get even better.

Clem ensures that Chromium is now available in the Linux Mint and LMDE repositories. And they will do the work themselves, without depending on Debian, who also have it available, but it is usually outdated. For this, they have obtained a Ryzen 9 3900 computer with 128GB of RAM and NMVe, which will speed up the process and they will be able to upload it to their repositories one hour after the launch of a new version.

Linux Mint launches the first version of its app for IPTV

What they have also mentioned again this week is their app for IPTV, which they have baptized as hypnotix. Available from this link, Clem wanted to make it clear that it is not for what many think, that it was probably to see pirated content or that it looked like Kodi. Hypnotix comes with a free content provider, FreeIPTV, which will help us see how it works, but we have to forget about watching good channels like Movistar +.

This week's note ends by talking about the possibility of marking files as favorites and the future of Cinnamon, which CJS 4.8 will use the new Mozjs78.

All or part of what is explained here will arrive in Linux Mint 20.1, codenamed Ulyssa, and will be available before christmas. Taking into account that the Christmas campaign begins on December 20, surely that same day we can already download it from the official server of the project.
