Linux Mint is pleased to announce that Warpinator is available as a Flatpak package.

Warpinator on Kubuntu

Each month, Linux Mint Lead Developer Clement Lefebvre publishes a monthly newsletter on the progress of his project. On August 2020 It is not that he has told us about many changes in his operating system, beyond some corrections that have come from Linux Mint 20 and LMDE 4 to Linux Mint 19.3, but they have dealt with two interesting topics. One of them is that we can already use warpinator on any Linux distribution.

Warpinator is a kind of AirDrop for devices using Linux operating system, that is, it allows us to send files to computers that are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. The tool had been announced for some time and was available in Linux Mint, but now it is available as a Flatpak package, which means that we can use it in any distribution as long as we have support enabled. The direct link to Flathub is this.

Warpinator and Web App Manager, the latest that Linux Mint offers to all Linux users

The other tool we are told about in this month's newsletter is ICE, one that did we mention last June talking about Peppermint 11 and that it is used to create webapps. ICE has been in development since 2010, but now Linux Mint has become part of the project, or more specifically they have started a dialogue to collaborate with Peppermint.

What Linux Mint has started has the name of Web App Manager and, although it is based on ICE, it includes:

  • New name and icon.
  • New user interface.
  • 100% compatible from / to ICE.
  • A split backend to make it easier for ICE and Web App Manager to use the same code base if they both want to retain separate UIs.
  • Ability to edit web applications.
  • Icon theme support with automatically guessed icons for popular websites.
  • Improved favicon downloads (including support for favicongrabber.com).
  • Ability to show or hide the Firefox navigation bar.
  • Full translation support for all major languages (at launch).
  • Once the app is created, it will appear in the application menu like any other.

Interested users can now test the beta of Web App Manager that is available in this link, but we advise that it is a DEB package for Debian / Ubuntu and derivatives. Web App Manager will probably also come to Flathub when its first stable version is released. In the meantime, we can take a look at the beta and install the stable version of Warpinator on our Linux distribution.

The tool to create webapps seems to be a solution for those who created them with chromium and after migrating to LM 20 they can no longer do so. It seems like a good idea to me, but it would be interesting if Mr. Lefrebvre would get off his ass and offer an alternative for those who want to install Chromium from the repositories
