Linux Mint 17, among systems that are no longer supported since April 30

Just like we advance in February, although we did not publish anything on the day in question, the last April 30 Ubuntu 14.04 stopped receiving support. The Ubuntu version released in April 2014 was supported for 5 years as it was an LTS version, but that support ended on Tuesday of last week. This means that you will no longer receive any security, feature, or application updates. Another affected system is Linux Mint 17, as we can read in the monthly note published on his official blog.

In the aforementioned entry they tell us that all versions 17 are affected, i.e. Linux Mint 17 and its updates 17.1, 17.2 and 17.3. At the moment, the repositories will continue to work, but what they will contain will be versions of software that will not be updated again. The team recommends updating to a supported version, such as Linux Mint 18.x or the latest version, Linux Mint 19.1, all available from this link.

Linux Mint 17 will no longer receive updates

Keep in mind that this news not only affects Linux Mint 17. This news affects all Ubuntu 14.04 based operating systems. Ubuntu-based versions are usually supported the same time as Canonical's system, so if the company that runs Mark Shuttleworth abandons support, the rest of the developers do the same.

Those of you who are still using an operating system based on Ubuntu 14.04 should upgrade to a supported version, as long as you want to continue receiving updates of all kinds, among which I would highlight the security ones. The decision has to be made between whether we want something more stable, for which we have to choose LTS or Long Term Support versions, or if we want to use the most up-to-date software, for which we must use the latest versions of the operating system.

In the case of Linux Mint, I would recommend installing the latest version which, in addition to including the most updated software, is an LTS version. As for Ubuntu, the latest LTS version is Ubuntu 18.04. What version are you going to update your PC to?
