Linus Torvalds doesn't want to be predictable

After the release of kernel 4.16, a transition period has been opened for the development of the next version. This transition period or merge window has been closed and with it the candidate version of kernel 4.17 has been released. The next kernel that will arrive on our computers this year. However, Linus Torvalds, its creator and project leader, he is not happy with the numbering that the latest kernel versions are having and could well be altered soon.Linux Torvalds has stated via the mailing list of the kernel that does not want to be predictable and that the next version may be version 5 or maybe not. The truth is that for the moment it will be version 4.17 of the kernel, with which another milestone has been reached within the Git repository and that is something remarkable.

For the rest, the new version of the kernel does not introduce any great news and is still a maintenance version. In this version, bugs that have appeared have been corrected and hardware platforms that had become obsolete have been eliminated. The list of removed platforms is blackfin, cris, frv, m32r, metag, mn10300, score and tile. On the other side, the nds32 platform or also called RISC Andes Technology 32-0bit architecture has been added.

The code for this kernel is already available at kernel.orgHowever, it is not recommended to use it on production or stable computers since the kernel is unstable. But the most striking are the words of Linus Torvalds, the project leader. A few words that augur a drastic change in the kernel numbering and in which many developers agree with Linus Torvalds, since version numbers make no more sense than being used as the package name.
