They had been announcing their arrival for some time, and now we have here a new major update, or rather, a medium one, of the most popular free office suite. The Document Foundation has made official a few minutes ago the launch of LibreOffice 7.4, and no matter how many novelties they include in their list, there is something that is not missing: the point that mentions that they continue to improve support for Microsoft Office formats.

Being the first version of a series, LibreOffice 7.4 has arrived with new features, such as the support for the WebP image format. Personally, I was surprised to read this point, as I thought it was widespread enough to appear in this suite and elsewhere, but I was wrong. In any case, that format can already be used. Below is a list of some of the new features that have come with LibreOffice 7.4.

LibreOffice 7.4 Highlights

  • General:
    • Support for WebP images and EMZ/WMZ files.
    • Help pages for the ScriptForge script library.
    • Search field for the plugin manager.
    • Performance and compatibility improvements.
  • Writers:
    • Better change tracking in the footer area.
    • Edited lists now show original numbers in change tracking.
    • New typographic settings for hyphenation.
  • calculation:
    • Support for 16384 columns.
    • Extra features in the AutoSum widget.
    • New menu item to search by sheet names.
  • Impress now supports document themes.

LibreOffice 7.4 en the most up-to-date version of the office suite, but it is not the one recommended for production teams. For those who need stability, the chosen option should be LibreOffice 7.3.5. The new 7.4 is intended for those of us who want the news as soon as possible. Although they have gone through the different phases of development and we are dealing with stable versions, The Document Foundation recommends using a version with more point updates on production computers.

Whether you prefer one or the other, LibreOffice can be downloaded from their website or from most official repositories, as well as from Snapcraft y Flatub.

I love LibreOffice, unfortunately corporate users don't accept it because it doesn't have the ribbon interface as similar as possible to Office365 and they don't want to waste time relearning the differences.

For several years now, the Mexican Institute of Social Security IMSS installed OpenOffice on all PCs nationwide and they were forced to adapt, but unfortunately they did not update to LibreOffice and they were stuck. Some users bought MS Office with money out of their pocket to install it on their computers and even pirated versions.
