LibreOffice 7.0 now available, with news and without the controversial label

After a confusing and somewhat controversial time by a label, The Document Foundation has had the pleasure of announce the launch de LibreOffice 7.0. It is a new major release, which although it is true that it includes outstanding news, it is also true that it is more than likely that it has come with some new bugs that will be corrected in future versions. In fact, and as usual, the company continues to offer v6.4.5 as a version for production teams.

Among the most outstanding novelties that come with LibreOffice 7.0 we have that the Cairo code has been replaced by Google's Skia library, which has also made us now have the possibility of using GPU acceleration with Vulkan. LibreOffice 7.0 Highlights

  • Support for ODF 1.3, the native LibreOffice format.
  • Skia graphics engine and Vulkan GPU acceleration.
  • Improved support for DOCX, XLSX, PPTX documents.
  • New icon theme that is activated by default in macOS and is called Sukapura.
  • New shape galleries with arrows, diagrams, icons and more.
  • Glitter effects and soft edges for objects.
  • Writer:
    • Navigator is easier to use, with more context menus.
    • Semi-transparent text is now supported.
    • Bookmarks can now be displayed online in text.
    • Padded numbering in lists, for consistency.
    • Better handling of quotes and apostrophes.
  • calculation:
    • New functions for the generation of non-volatile random numbers.
    • Added keyboard shortcut for autosum.
  • Impress and Draw:
    • Semi-transparent text is also supported here.
    • Subscripts now revert to 8% by default.
    • PDFs larger than 500cm can now be generated.

LibreOffice 7.0 is now available for all supported systems from the developer's download page, which we can access from this link. Linux users have it available in DEB, RPM and binary packages, and the versions will be updated soon Snap y Flatpak. Those of us who are using the versions offered by our distributions will still have to wait a few days (or weeks) for the new packages to appear as an update.
